thedailyexposure.com - updated!

May 16th, 2009

thedailyexposure.comJust a quick post to let you all know that I’ve just finished updating my photoblog, thedailyexposure.com. I’m still using PixelPost to power the site but have switched to a modified version of ‘The World in 35mm’ template. For quite a while now I’ve been looking for a clean and fresh looking template to switch to and hopefully the new version of the site achieves this. It’s a little more functional too.

Anyway, it’s the first time I’ve really been happy with the site so please check it out and let me know if you’ve got any suggestions or can spot any problems with it! Here’s the link, again…

Photography 101

May 10th, 2009

Learning the BasicsPeople often say things to me like “I’ve got a camera, but I could never take pictures like you do” or “I don’t know how to work my camera so my pictures always come out rubbish”. Well, cameras are fairly complicated pieces of equipment these days but that shouldn’t be a reason not to learn the basics of photography if you’re looking to improve your skills.

I thought I’d write this short and hopefully straightforward article to explain the basics of photography in a way that makes sense to me. There’s a lot of information out there that explains all of this in much more detail but I’m the kind of person who likes to be out there implementing techniques rather than spending ages reading about them, so I’ve tried to keep this as concise as possible.

All Work and No Play…

As Good as it Gets

… makes photography a very dull hobby. It also makes me a very dull person.

I took this shot last weekend while at the park with my girlfriend on a glorious evening enjoying a few beers and a couple of burgers made on a little disposable BBQ. I thought that life couldn’t get much better so used my trusty Panasonix Lumix LX3 to capture the moment. I tweaked the shot later that evening in photoshop and when I saw the final version realised that it was probably one my favourite shots that I’ve taken to date.

Photographers’ Protest

February 17th, 2009

Copyright GETTYIt pains me slightly to write this article because it feels like I’m back in the office doing some research!

So, I was looking at the pictures of the photographers protesting outside Scotland Yard over the new anti-terror laws which have just come into force. I wondered what all the fuss was about so thought I’d look into it a bit more. To be honest, I thought that it would just be everyone over-reacting but having (quickly) read the legislation, I’m not too sure. Read more…

Is This Cheating? HDR Tutorial

February 3rd, 2009

Anstruther MarinaLet me start by saying that most of this post was typed on my iPhone whilst sitting in the dentist’s waiting lounge. Oh the wonders of technology! (Seriously though, it is quite incredible what you can do with these things.)

So yesterday I had the day off work and we decided to go to Anstruther (admittedly, we fancied trying the award winning fish & chips at the Anstruther Fish Bar). If you’re from the UK you’ll probably have experienced first hand the heavy snowfall that we’ve been having and Edinburgh was no exception. I took my camera gear with me not knowing what the landscape in the area was but expecting to get a few ‘white’ shots nonetheless. I forgot, however, that Anstruther is right on the coast and so escaped most of the snowfall.

Meditation Noteworthy

January 30th, 2009

Edinburgh FringeAnother PhotoFriday noteworthy this week - I’m on a roll!

Just thought I’d do another quick post to thank those who voted for this shot in last weeks themed challenge, meditation. You can see the other entries here.

I’ve just checked the exif details on the shot and have been left somewhat depressed - I thought I took this shot during the Edinburgh Festival last year. However, it turns out that I took it in 2007! Arghhh, where has the time gone???

Blurry Taxis

January 22nd, 2009

New York, New YorkIf you’re a regular visitor of dpreview.com you’ll probably know that they’ve got a new section on their site devoted to challenges. It seems that there’s challenge sites all over the place and dpreview.com have finally caught up.

When I looked at one of the open challenges a couple of weeks, titled (rather specifically) “Blurry taxis”, I thought I had the perfect shot for it. So imagine my delight when I stopped by yesterday to see that, out of 240 entries, my image came first. You can see the shots, as well as the other entries, here.

Hard Disk Failure

January 12th, 2009

Hard Disk FailureThese are the three words that no photographer with tens of thousands of digital photos stored on their hard disk wants to hear.  Ironically, my own stomach churning hard drive failure story started as I was trying to implement a new backup solution to avoid such an incident happening but instead it seemed to be the trigger.

I’ve had quite a few computers since I started becoming interested in digital photography and found myself very quickly filling up my internal hard drives. So I bought a LaCie 250GB external hard drive which (up until last week) had faihfully served me on three different computers and in five different houses/flats (i.e. it’s been used and moved about a lot). I’ve read quite a lot recently that when it comes to hard drive failures, it’s not a question of “if” but “when” will it happen. So perhaps it wasn’t surprising then that it should happen to me.

Government ePetition Response

January 12th, 2009

I wasn’t aware of the online petiton to clarify the law on photography in public places, but apparently it attracted over 5,500 signatures. And earlier today Downing Street confirmed that “There are no legal restrictions on photography in public places” but went on to say, usurprisingly, that “the law applies to photographers as it does to anybody else in a public place”.
